Ignitions and broken keys
Key won’t turn or broke off? Don’t force it.
A key that won’t turn is usually caused by a locked steering column, a worn key, or worn wafers inside the ignition cylinder. A broken key usually happens when a worn key is forced.
Digging at a broken piece with a screwdriver or pliers can push it deeper and damage the cylinder. We use extraction tools made for the job, then repair or rebuild the cylinder and cut a new key if you need one.
What we handle
- Broken keys in ignitions and door locks
- Keys stuck in the ignition
- Ignition cylinders that won’t turn
- Worn wafers and cylinder rebuilds
- Replacement keys cut to match
- Trunk and door lock repairs
Try this first
If the key won’t turn, gently turn the steering wheel left and right while turning the key. A locked steering column is a common cause and doesn’t need a locksmith.

Why won’t my key turn in the ignition?
Common causes are a locked steering wheel, a worn key, or worn parts inside the ignition cylinder. If moving the steering wheel doesn’t help, the key or cylinder likely needs attention.
Can you remove a key that broke off in my car door?
Yes. We extract broken keys from door, trunk and ignition locks without damaging the cylinder, then cut a replacement.
Do I need to tow my car?
Usually not. Most ignition and key problems can be fixed where the vehicle is parked.
Do you fix electrical ignition problems?
We work on the mechanical lock cylinder and keys. If the problem is electrical, such as a failed ignition switch or starter, we’ll tell you so you can take it to a mechanic.
