Warning signs to watch for
- No business name. The phone is answered with a generic “locksmith services” instead of a company name.
- A price that sounds too good to be true. A low “service call” fee is often only the trip charge, not the work.
- No written estimate. The technician won’t give you a total before starting.
- Drilling right away. Most standard residential and vehicle locks can be opened without drilling. Pushing to drill and replace a lock immediately is a red flag.
- An unmarked vehicle and no identification. A legitimate technician can tell you who they work for and show identification.
- No invoice. You should get an itemized invoice with the company’s name and contact information.
Questions to ask on the phone
- What is the legal name of your business, and where are you located?
- What will the total cost be, including the service call, labor and any after-hours charges?
- Could the price change once you arrive, and why?
- Will the technician confirm the price with me before starting work?
- How will the technician identify themselves when they arrive?
How to check a locksmith in Florida
Florida doesn’t have a statewide locksmith license, although some counties license locksmiths locally. That makes it more important to check the company itself:
- Look up the business name on Sunbiz.org, the Florida Division of Corporations website, to confirm it’s a registered company.
- Ask whether the company is insured.
- Read reviews on Google and other sites, and check that the reviews mention your area.
- Save a trusted locksmith’s number in your phone before you need it.
Before the technician starts
Confirm the total price, make sure it matches what you were told on the phone, and don’t let work begin until you agree. It’s your right to say no.
